RADIOS

HISTORY

By Robert Terrett

In this project I will talk about the history, development and effects of the radio. The radio was the most used form of technology used, and it is still used today. It is a form of communication that does not need wires. It uses electromagnetic waves, which are sent by the antenna. These radio waves can travel at the speed of light over very large distances. When the information is received sound comes out of a speaker. The main part of the radio that I will talk about is the radio waves. And how radio waves have improved our standard of living.

Before the radio people were able to communicate by the telephone and the telegraph. The news usually came from the newspaper. Before people stayed home to listen to music or news, they went out. People usually found something to occupy them for entertainment. Before the radio there was not really any invention to occupy themselves. With the radio people found out about the news, sport and events much quicker.

There were many people in the early 1880s that had the idea that sound could be sent through radio waves. In 1887 Heinrich Hertz discovered radio waves. In 1895 Gugliemo Marconi invented the first practical wireless telegraph. Later on this invention was used for emergencies at sea. These radios had an aerial, which was a sheet of metal attached to thin wooden poles. Some wireless sets were setup in lighthouses along the English coast. Edwin H. Armstrong invented the feedback circuit in 1912, and the superheterodyne circuit in 1918. Armstrong was able to adjust the radio and tuning it over a wide range of frequencies. Radio broadcasting began in 1920. In the 1930's radios were being used for airplanes, police and military. During the 1950's there were a lot of portable radios made, they also installed car radios. The system was for FM receivers, the AM receiver was then created. The radio was becoming more and more popular, and people were starting to see the benefits of it.

IMPACT
There was a need for the radio because it made our whole lives much easier. It was mainly seen as a use for emergencies or news/entertainment. Before the television this was the most used form of technology used. People were amazed how they could communicate from far distances. The production of radios became very large; everyone wanted one in their homes. Radios were also seen as a radio alarm clock. Some portable radios were also made to be cassette players. Local radio stations were put up, and were becoming more popular.
The local radio stations in a town usually just play music, which is controlled by a DJ. Sometimes they might get a famous person on the show. There is also on the spot reporters out somewhere doing a report. They sometimes have competitions where you have to ring them up and answer something. They also ask for requests from listeners. But, almost every radio station play music.

Radios have become very important in our lives, even though we dont think about it much. When radio waves were invented they did not think that it would lead to the creation of the satellite. We can now send information to the other side of the world in seconds. We also have mobile phones, which use radio waves. If a mobile phone rang up another mobile phone there would need to be two base stations. The mobile phone would send a signal to the nearest base station. Then a cellphone would exchange for the telephone making the call, then the signal would be sent to another cellphone. The call would be exchanged for the telephone being called, which would be sent to a base station nearest to the receiving phone. Then radio waves would be sent to the mobile telephone receiving the call. The radio waves are used when there is a signal to a base station and from a base station.

DEVELOPMENT
We are now able to write or talk to anyone in the world, from any given place. We have become more mobile and we are even able to work in planes. A remote for a garage door or for the computer uses radio waves. It has made our lives much quicker and easier. Radios lead to the creation of television. A radio was basically a television, but without a screen. Some watches are so high-tech they have radios in them. Planes and ships use radios to communicate with other people, to help them find their way. There is also the GTS, or the Global Tracking System. Which allows people to track other peoples cars for safety, weather it is for work or for reassurance. Many people have their car stolen every year, that is why this form of technology has been introduced. Local companies such as AUSTRACK do this for our safety. We are also able to track into outer space, to look for any outer space aliens. This has been possible with the help of the radio, of its radio waves.

I have probably used a hundred machines that were invented with the help of the radio, I am sure my friends have too. When we invent things we are just keeping up with the times. If the radio were never invented we would not have half the things we have today. There are still some bad points with the radio. It has lead to all this creation, but the radio waves have shown to have an effect on people. The radio waves from machines have caused some people to have problems. Some people have ended up in hospital because the radio waves have been effecting them.
I think the radio was a great invention. But, some people have made machines, which send out more powerful radio waves. Every day theyre radio waves going through the atmosphere sometimes effecting some of us. We should be thinking of a way to make radio wave harmless to us. I think that more then eighty percent of the world would want to keep radios. The advances that have been made from then have been extraordinary.
